DMV licence points accumulate over three years. Twelve points exposes you to a suspension of up to 60 days, and only eight points does so after a licence has already been reinstated. A second suspension runs up to six months and a third or later up to one year. The table below lists the same thresholds.

A second conviction for speeding above 55 mph within one year of the first, or speeding together with reckless driving on the same occasion, exposes you to a 60-day suspension. If you already have one speeding conviction inside the last twelve months, the second ticket is the expensive one — and that changes which path is worth buying. G.S. 20-16.1
